First introduced as a handful of limited editions (including for Japanese retailer Yoshida), the minute repeating, luxury-sports watch has finally become a permanent addition to the Audemars Piguet catalogue with the Royal Oak Minute Repeater Supersonnerie in Titanium.

Despite its low-key looks, a tone-on-tone palette of a smoked, grey dial and brushed titanium case, the Royal Oak repeater  is loud – literally – thanks to the patented Supersonnerie system within, which produces chimes that are clearer and louder than those of a traditional striking wristwatch.

Initial thoughts

While the superb chime is the star of the latest, the design, which is almost perfect, is worth discussing. At a glance it’s a typical Royal Oak, but the dial layout makes it perhaps the most classical among its siblings – it has no date, and a small seconds at six replaces the central seconds that can be distracting at times.

The typical dress-watch layout isn’t special per se, but it’s unique on a Royal Oak, a watch that’s intended to be sporty. Still, because the Royal Oak is thin, it has an air of elegance that resonates with that of a small seconds. Notably, the sub-dial sits harmoniously between the centre and the edge of the dial, while not being overly large, which would make it look like a vintage, chronometric dress watch.

The sectored finish on the sub-dial leaves it looking smaller and sportier

But the Minute Repeater remains eminently contemporary with its material and finish. The case and bracelet are made in titanium, which is a lightweight material that’s also greyish in tone. Add to that a smoked, grey tapisserie dial, the result is a muted and modern look, balancing the small seconds layout that can appear too classical on an integrated-bracelet sports watch.

In short, it’s one of the most restrained Royal Oaks on the market, but is still a demonstration of good design, with a look that’s harmoniously traditional and futuristic. And above all, it’s impressive mechanically – all for around US$350,000.

Supersonnerie

The best feature of the Royal Oak Minute Repeater is no doubt the chiming complication. While chiming watches are impressive to begin with – so challenging that they remain rare, while most other high complications, such as the perpetual calendar, have been domesticated – AP’s patented Supersonnerie is even more impressive.

The term Supersonnerie is not related to either grande or petite sonnerie, which refer to the automated chiming modes at each quarter. Supersonnerie is instead a series of breakthroughs on the acoustic of the minute repeater, resulting in perhaps the loudest and clearest chiming wristwatches.

In terms of volume, AP adds a piece of metal between the base plate and case back. Dubbed soundboard, the extra plate holds the gongs, and resonates with the gongs when they are hit by the hammers. The resonating effect helps amplify the sound,  leaving more of it being transmitted out of the case, instead of being absorbed. And because the soundboard is secured by rubber gasket, the watch is impressively water resistant – up to 50 m – which is a lot when most chiming wristwatches are only dust resistant.

It’s also worth mentioning that because titanium is less dense than gold, it allows for better transmission of sound, which means marginally louder chime.

But another problem the Supersonnerie solves is the buzzing sound when the repeater is activated, a result of the governor, which regulates the pace of repeater’s gear train and hence the pace of chime. There are generally two schools of governor, the noisier anchor system or less noisy fly wheel. AP has opted for the actor system, but with a shock absorber that eliminates the buzzing noise, meaning the chime is clear, on top of being loud.

Because the movement is covered by the soundboard, a close case back makes sense. At the same time, the back has cut-outs that allow for better sound transmission
